Discover all outdoor climbing locations across Madeira Island. From ocean-side sport climbing to mountain trad routes, volcanic basalt offers year-round climbing in stunning scenery.
Climbing in Madeira Island started around 1940 by the pioneer Dr. Rui Silva. The volcanic rock — basalt — is sharp, solid and offers unique challenges. Sport climbing is the most common style, but Madeira also has classic mixed routes and a growing trad climbing scene. Grades range from easy 3s to hard 8s, with most crags close to a road. The average annual temperature of 19.6°C means year-round climbing is possible.
